Analysis:
Ken Niumatalolo enters his 2nd year leading the Spartans. San Jose State was picked to finish 3rd in the Mountain West preseason media poll, the highest prediction for the program since divisions were eliminated. QB Walker Eget, supported by a strengthened receiving corps and capable RB trio make them a contender in the Mountain West. It’s unlikely they catch up to Boise St in conference this year, but they do have a lot of talent. Derrick Odum runs a 3-4 scheme, and they should be strong defensively as well.
Matt Drinkall takes the helm in his first season after being hired late in 2024 following Jim McElwain’s retirement. The Chippewas are in a rebuilding stage, and headed to the West Coast might not be the best thing for them, as we think they will struggle with the Spartans talent.
